4 Signs Your Water Pump is Failing

The water pump plays a vital role in maintaining your vehicle’s proper engine temperature. The pump moves the water coolant mixture throughout the engine compartment through the hoses to and from your radiator. If the water pump starts to fail, you risk doing significant damage to your engine.

Since the water pump is critical to your engine’s health, you should know the classic signs of a failing water pump, so you can replace it before it fails. The water pump is located in the front of the engine compartment and is driven by the timing chain or serpentine belt in most cars. Some water pumps are electrically driven.

Unusual Noises

Anytime you hear an unusual noise coming from under your hood, you should find out which part is making the noise. Noise is the first indication of wear in a part.

If you hear the water pump squealing, whining, grumbling, or making any other abnormal noise, there is a mechanical issue with the pump. If replaced in time, you can save your engine.

Overheating

If you notice the temperature gauge on your dash rising, then you have a problem somewhere in the cooling system.

A failed water pump will cause the engine to overheat to the point where it could cause catastrophic damage like cracked cylinder heads, a cracked block, or even burnt pistons.

Coolant Leak

The water pump is located towards the front of the engine compartment in most cars, so if you notice a puddle of green or orange coolant on the ground in the area of the water pump, you probably have a pump problem.

You should check your water pump for signs of rust or corrosion since those problems can build over time and may not be as noticeable as a puddle under the car. Gradual leakage may mean that coolant has built up in the pump, which will decrease its effectiveness.

You might notice areas where the coolant has run down the side of the water pump where it can gunk up when mixed with all the dirt that is in the engine compartment.

The small leak may not cause the engine to overheat, but in time, it will make it harder for the pump to keep the fluids moving throughout the engine.

Steam

It is not a good thing if you see steam or smoke coming from under your hood. It can be an indication of a serious problem within the engine and cooling system in your vehicle.

If this happens, stop driving the vehicle, and let it cool down for a few hours. If you are unsure, you should seek a professional mechanic; they will be able to make a proper diagnosis.

You want to stop a water pump from failing, so if you notice any of these signs, especially if it is making noise, then stop driving. You can stop the risk of further damage by paying attention to the warning signs.
